Fox Marketing Veloster Turbo rounds out Hyundai’s SEMA Show line-up

23 October, 2013 – Hyundai has joined forces with Fox Marketing Cars to create the most powerful street-focused Veloster Turbo ever. The car will be showcased at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas, 5-8 November.

Fox Marketing leveraged the outstanding reliability and performance potential of Hyundai’s 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder direct-injected, turbocharged Gamma powerplant as the core of its SEMA concept. A comprehensive package of advanced engine components, including a new 845 Motorsports turbo upgrade, BorgWarner EFR turbo, front-mounted intercooler, AEM water/methanol injection system, VP Racing 101-octane performance fuel and an ECU tune from SeoulfulRacing, boosts output to an impressive 276 kW.

The addition of a UNIQ Performance strut brace, ImportShark chassis bracing and fully-adjustable ARK Performance coil-over suspension ensure the Fox Marketing Veloster Turbo puts all that power to the tarmac and keeps it flat in high-speed cornering, while new Street Pro LE seats and Takata Drift III 4-point harnesses hold the driver firmly in place. Braking performance has been improved with WP Pro EX6 6-piston front callipers with carbon fibre ducting and 345 mm wavy-cut rotors for neck-wrenching stopping power.

Exterior modifications give the Veloster Turbo an aggressive demeanour that perfectly complements the engine and chassis upgrades. A hand-mixed paint from BASF colour lab dubbed R-M Oynx HD Waterborne SkyAqua Pearl is the most striking exterior component, while the addition of Hyundai Genesis fog lights, an ImportShark front lip spoiler, custom rear fascia mesh and custom front fascia round-out the bold exterior modifications.

“The Veloster Turbo was designed with affordable performance in mind,” said Scott Margason, director, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Fox Marketing’s unique concept showcases the versatility of our turbocharged 4-cylinder Gamma engine family while expanding the overall performance envelope for the Veloster line.”

Koup Turbo boosts Aussie garages

Koup Turbo boosts local Australian garages

Kia’s first petrol turbo-charged offering in Australia, the 1.6-litre T-GDI Koup, headlines the arrival of the second generation of the model widely acknowledged as Kia’s sexiest car ever.

With its 150kW twin-scroll turbo the all-new Koup, starting at $27,990 for the six speed manual, is the most powerful model available for under $30,000 in Australia.

 2014_kia_cerato_koup_os_04

TURBO powered Koups feature a unique exhaust system with transversely mounted free-flow muffler and dual tail pipes set into the black diffuser. The exhaust sound is tuned to produce an especially sporty tone between 1000-to-4000 rpm which is also 10-to-15dB louder than naturally aspirated models.

Depending on model, acceleration time from 0 to 100kph varies from 8.9 seconds down to 7.4 seconds (with the six-speed automatic transmission), while top speed is up to 222kph. Fuel consumption is as low as 7.3 l/100 km on the combined cycle for the Si and 7.7 l/100km for the manual Turbo.

Every all-new Cerato Koup model will feature a six-speed transmission as Kia continues to upgrade the specification of its products to match customers’ ever-rising expectations. Drivers are offered a choice of manual or multi-mode automatic gearboxes.

“Since the Koup’s first generation launch the car has been praised as having the look of a genuine sports coupe,” Kia Motors Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, Tony Barlow, said.

“There had also always been the question mark over whether the performance of the Koup matched it’s exciting looks. The arrival of the new 1.6-litre Turbo with 150kW makes that question redundant.”

Mr Barlow said that while the needs of customers who felt they did not need the extra urge of a Turbo would be well served by the 129kW naturally aspirated 2.0-litre GDi option, the halo value of the Koup Turbo could not be overestimated.

“It brings with it a new sense of excitement and freshness to a brand already being driven by award-winning design, best-practice engineering and safety and leading-edge customer service and benefits,” Mr Barlow said.

“And this is just the start. With the Koup Turbo filling the classic Grand Tourer role, next year will see the arrival of a focused performance line in the pro_cee’d GT.”

Beneath its distinctive exterior, new Koup incorporates all the improved engineering first developed for the Cerato sedan, with an all-new bodyshell structure, improved quality, upgraded equipment with a host of additional convenience and safety features, a more spacious cabin with enhanced quality, greater refinement and an upgraded powertrain line-up that delivers outstanding performance and competitive fuel economy.

As with the new Cerato sedan and hatch the new Koup boasts a full suite of safety features, both active and passive. Six airbags are standard as is electronic stability control, HAC (hill-start assist control), VSM (vehicle stability management) and ESS (emergency stop signalling).

As with all new Kias, the Koup has benefitted from an extensive program of localised ride and handling to provide owners with the driving experience they demand for Australia’s challenging road conditions.

Koup buyers will also enjoy the customer ownership benefits of an unlimited kilometre 5-year warranty, the clarity and convenience of a capped-price servicing program and the reassurance of roadside assist.

Pricing for the six-speed manual Si 2.0-litre GDi starts at $23,990. The six-speed automatic transmission for both GDi and T-GDi models is available for a $2200 premium.

All-New 2014 Kia Cerato Koup

All-new Cerato Koup raises Kia’s sporty appeal

Kia’s all-new second-generation Cerato Koup will hit Australian showrooms early next month, bringing with it the performance the car’s sleek looks have long promised.

The highly-anticipated Koup’s 1.6-litre GDi twin-scroll Turbo, the first forced induction petrol engine for Kia Motors Australia, underscores Kia’s determination to keep the customer satisfied.

“The introduction of the new Koup follows the launch earlier this year of the all-new third-generation Cerato sedan and five-door hatchback, which continue to be Kia’s most successful models for worldwide sales.

The triumvirate of Cerato models has achieved more than 2.5 million global sales since its introduction in 2004, including 385,000 units in 2012 when these models accounted for almost 17% of Kia’s total annual sales.

Now, the all-new version of the compact, sporty Cerato Koup features a sleeker profile with futuristic and dynamic styling, plus a more luxurious image. It is longer and wider than the current car, with a significantly extended wheelbase.

Beneath its distinctive exterior, new Koup incorporates all the improved engineering first developed for the Cerato sedan, with an all-new bodyshell structure, improved quality, upgraded equipment with a host of additional convenience and safety features, a more spacious cabin with enhanced quality, greater refinement and an upgraded powertrain line-up (ranging from 129kW to 150kW) that delivers outstanding performance and competitive fuel economy.

“The three-model Cerato family has become our brand’s biggest-selling export model, so the introduction of the exciting second-generation Koup is hugely significant for Kia,” commented Soon-Nam Lee, Kia’s Vice-President of Overseas Marketing.

“We are raising our product standards to the next level with the all-new Cerato Koup, which adds emotional appeal to its established core values of design, quality and value,” added Mr Lee. “This all-new model will boost our competitiveness in the compact sporty coupe segment “ known as the C-segment in many countries“ which is one of the world’s most important and most competitive marketplaces.”

In Australia the all-new Cerato Koup will be classified in the sports segment.

While creating the all-new Cerato family of cars, Kia’s designers and engineers have listened closely to customer feedback. The resulting trio of new cars is a bold demonstration of Kia’s determination to deliver models which exceed customer expectations and provide a rewarding long-term ownership experience.

“Although economic uncertainties continue in many markets, our research points to rising demand (up by between 6.1% and 40.2%) for C-segment coupes in North America, China, South America, Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific region.

“We are confident that the new Cerato Koup with its transformed appearance, broad range of new features, improved powertrains, performance and refinement, will attract both existing and new customers to Kia showrooms.

“When all three bodystyles of new Cerato family are on sale, we anticipate achieving annual global sales for this model (in 2014) approaching 500,000 units, including more than 120,000 sales in General Market countries*, to claim a 3.3% share of the global C1 Segment,” concluded Mr Lee.

Third-generation Cerato models are manufactured at Kia’s Hwasung facility in Korea.

*General Market
For Kia’s global marketing program, General Market countries include the regions of Central and South America, the Caribbean, Asia (excluding China and Korea), the Pacific, Middle East and Africa

2. STYLING & DESIGN

New sophistication with boosted ‘dynamic muscularity’

Now with a bolder but more sophisticated design, the all-new ‘look’ of the third-generation Cerato Koup was inspired by European coupes and created at Kia’s American Design Centre in California. The design team was directed by Peter Schreyer, Kia’s Chief Design Officer and headed by Tom Kearns, Chief Designer, Kia Motors America. Except for the hood and front fenders, every exterior panel on the new Koup is unique to this model.

Like its Cerato sister-cars, Koup is sculpted to portray ‘dynamic muscularity’ and provoke an emotional response. The sleeker cab-forward styling, rising beltline, swooping C-pillar and distinctive eye-catching concave door contours project an aura of sporty luxury.

At the front, Koup’s stance is bold and athletic. The slimmer front grille and deeper, wider, lower air intake, together with the voluminous bumper design and protruding ‘lips’ below the round fog lamps, give this model a distinctive face. The Kia badge is moved from the grille to the panel in front of the shortened bonnet. High performance (Turbo models) feature a dark chrome front grille, carbon-look bumper garnish and front fog lamps with added LEDs.

The profile of new Koup is enhanced by the adoption of frameless doors, flush side glazing and alloy wheels in either 17-inch (Si) or 18-inch (Turbo). Turbo models have black-high-gloss door mirrors, door handles (with chrome inserts) and added body-colour side-skirts.

Koup’s rear view has simple, modern surfaces and clever details. The two-tone bumper features a matt black diffuser on the Si and a high-gloss feature on the Turbo, flanked by red reflectors framed in black. The trunk lid is shaped to reduce aerodynamic drag and the LED rear combination lamps on the Turbo smooth the airflow while also reinforcing the Koup’s wide stance. The Turbo models are fitted with a carbon-look rear diffuser with dual exhaust tail pipes.

Compared with its predecessor, new Cerato Koup is 50mm longer (4530mm), 15mm wider (1780mm) and 10mm higher (1410mm). The wheelbase has been extended by 50mm (to 2700mm), becoming the longest in the C1 segment and is now the same as Kia’s Sorento SUV.

New Cerato Koup’s front overhang has been reduced by 15mm, while the rear overhang is 15mm larger – which together with the swooping C-pillar design gives the latest model an eagerness to leap forwards, presenting a truly sporty appearance. Trunk capacity is 433 litres (VDA) – among the largest in class – and the trunk opening is 60mm wider for improved access.

Despite new Cerato Koup’s larger external dimensions, its sculptured proportions, together with careful attention to surface detailing and airflow-smoothing panels beneath the engine bay, centre section and trunk, have cut the Kia coupe’s aerodynamic drag to Cd 0.30 (down from 0.31) – boosting both performance and economy at high speeds.

Cerato Koup will be available in Australia in six colours _ Racing Red, Abyss Blue (standard); Snow White Pearl, Aurora Black, Bright Silver and Metal Stream (premium).

3. COMFORT & CONVENIENCE

Enhanced quality and new ‘high-tech’ premium features

The interior design of new Koup concentrates on sportiness and adopts nature’s ebbs and flows as a motif. The driver-focused cockpit places all the major and minor controls within easy-to-operate reach, while the sweeping curve of the centre stack (from behind the instrument cluster around and down to the centre console) creates a voluminous feeling. The sweeping appearance is re-enforced by carbon-look trim on the vertical band each side of the stack that incorporates the adjustable air vents.

For enhanced elegance, soft-touch materials are applied to the upper door trims, dashboard, door armrests, door centre trim panels and the centre console.

Because new Koup is wider and higher, its ability to provide generous accommodation for people and cargo has been enhanced. While the front seats continue to offer excellent accommodation, space in the rear of the cabin is improved with headroom (up 28mm), legroom (up 51mm) and shoulder room (up 15mm), all increased.

Like the Cerato sedan, driver comfort in the Koup has been enhanced by fitting an organ-type accelerator pedal which more closely follows the natural movement of the user’s foot, while the steering wheel features ’tilt & telescopic’ adjustment over a 40mm range.

Because the B-pillars are further back than in the 4-door model, the front seat belts are fitted with extended guides to put them within easy reach of the front seat occupants for easier fastening.

Both Koup front seat occupants will enjoy the wider seats and deeper bolsters on both cushion and backrest for increased support during enthusiastic cornering. Both front seats are fitted with a simple to operate tilt-and-slide ‘walk-in’ device for easy access to the rear seats which have a centre folding armrest with cup holders, extra cup-holders in the side panel trim and a 60/40 spilt folding backrest. The heating and ventilation system has been upgraded.

The Cerato Koup driver will be faced by an instrument cluster centred on two large, chrome-edged, dials and a bridging centre information panel layout. The Dot-Matrix LCD cluster is standard.

Several storage areas are provided for Koup’s cabin. The size of the glove box is increased by 30 per cent to 8-litres, each front door pocket holds a 700ml bottle, while a cup holder is built into the rear side trim of the cabin. Along the car’s centreline, there is a sunglasses holder, covered 2-litre console multi-box (ahead of the gear lever), twin cupholders (behind the gear lever) and a 5.6-litre centre console box between the front seats.

For Australia, the all-new Cerato Koup will be offered in two levels _ Si with the 2.0-litre GDi engine and Turbo. A Touring option pack will be available on the Turbo which adds leather trim seats, satellite navigation, DVD players, dual-zone climate control, clean air module and auto defog.

4. REFINEMENT

Improved NVH for quieter, smoother running

Driver and passenger comfort is not just dependent on a car’s interior space and convenience features _ it can be enhanced or undermined by the level of NVH (noise, vibration and harshness). Consequently, Kia’s engineers worked hard to ensure that the latest Koup will deliver even better refinement than the previous model.

The Koup’s stiffer structure and new vibration-damping front subframe mountings are an excellent foundation for minimizing NVH. Additional measures taken to reduce NVH even further include lining the engine bay bulkhead with a new, three-layer, HMP3 noise-lowering pad, fitting new dual-frequency engine mounts and applying a new 700 g/m2 EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) sound insulating coating to the cabin floor.

Further NVH reduction measures resulted in the rear parcel shelf and cargo bay side trims incorporating a thinsulator filling, while the rear wheel arches are covered with sound insulation material and a breathable film is adopted within the cabin headliner. The front side chassis members, A-pillar and side sills are filled with foam. A dynamic damper is fitted to the shorter of the two front driveshafts.

The NVH improvement program has achieved a significant effect. Idle vibrations through the steering wheel and cabin floor have been reduced by 2dB, while idle noise level in the cabin is down 1dB to 38dB and noise during acceleration is cut by up to 2dB. Interior noise during a 110kph cruise is cut to 65dB.

5. ENGINES & TRANSMISSIONS

Outstanding power and performance

Australian drivers will have the choice of a 129kW Nu 2.0-litre GDi four cylinder engine with 209Nm or a 150kW Gamma 1.6-litre GDi Turbo four cylinder with 265Nm. Both are available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

These lightweight engines, which feature cast aluminum cylinder blocks and aluminum cylinder heads, are equipped with an offset crankshaft (to reduce friction), a low-noise timing chain, mechanical lash adjustment, variable intake valve timing (and exhaust valve timing on the Gamma), and a plastic variable intake manifold (on the Nu engine).

In combination, these features (together with the upgraded transmissions) enable new Cerato to deliver a highly competitive combination of class-best power and performance with modest fuel consumption and lower emissions.

To reduce fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions when cruising at speed, both the six-speed transmissions feature high top-gear ratios and low first-gear ratios that enable drivers to fully enjoy the new Koup’s off-the-line performance.

The automatic transmission in new Koup features two operating modes – fully automatic or ‘Sport’ engaged by moving the lever towards the driver when in D mode. For city driving, fully automatic mode is ideal, while ‘Sport’ mode allows for clutch-less sequential manual gear changes accompanied by paddle shifters for greater driver involvement.

6. SUSPENSION & RUNNING GEAR

Improved handling, steering ‘feel’ and ride quality

As with all Kia models bound for the Australian market, KMAu’s product team spent considerable time and effort sorting the best ride and handling package to suit local conditions and local driver preferences.

The challenge was to give the Koup its own special flavour and excitement while retaining the characteristics of the classic Grand Tourer _ performance with comfort.

Thousands of kilometres and hundreds of hours later, the product team are confident that the Koup will deliver all that is expected of it.

The specification of the new Koup’s fully independent MacPherson strut front suspension and CTBA (coupled torsion beam axle) rear suspension is unchanged, but both systems are developed to improve handling agility, enhance shock absorbance and deliver greater refinement. To ensure supple ride comfort and high-speed stability, gas-filled dampers are fitted front and rear.

At the front, the Koup’s suspension is mounted on an all-new, stronger sub-frame. The suspension’s lower arms have larger diameter bushes, the steering rack is moved forwards by 15mm (closer to the axle line) and the geometry is modified to deliver improved on-centre steering feel.

The CTBA rear suspension is a particularly compact design which ensures minimum intrusion into the Koup’s cabin and trunk space, and also maximizes under-floor space to accommodate the fuel tank and spare wheel.

For the latest Koup, the steering wheel features ’tilt & telescopic’ adjustment over a 40mm range. The turning circle (with the 50mm longer wheelbase) is still compact, measuring 10.6 metres and requiring just 2.85 turns of the wheel lock-to-lock thanks to a faster steering gear (15.1:1)

To ensure responsive steering ‘feel’ and precise vehicle control, every new Koup comes with Kia’s MDPS (Motor Driven Power Steering) system. Electric power assistance, rather than hydraulic assistance, delivers a significant fuel saving – up to 3 per cent.

Kia’s new FlexSteerâ„¢ system is standard on Australian Koup models. It provides three different settings (or weights) for the steering to match customer preference with Normal, Sport and Comfort modes. The effort required to turn the wheel varies with mode, but the gearing (the number of turns lock-to-lock) remains the same.

For maximum stopping power, new Koup models are equipped with an all-disc braking system featuring large diameter ventilated front discs (280mm for 2.0-liter Nu GDI, 300mm for 1.6-liter Gamma T-GDI models) and 262mm solid discs at the rear, backed up by ABS anti-lock.

7. SAFETY

High strength steel reinforces high safety standards

To maximize occupant protection, Kia makes the safety of people using its products and other road users a top priority – and invests heavily in safety-related R&D.

Previously, the second-generation Cerato was awarded a 4-Star safety rating by the US NHTSA and Australia’s NCAP. By 2013, the official crash test standards around the world have been made even tougher and Kia engineers have re-engineered both the new Koup’s structure and its safety equipment to ensure that the latest model will also deliver the highest safety standards in its class with full expectation of a maximum 5-star safety rating.

Now incorporating a much higher percentage (63%) of high-tensile steel than many competitor cars, the Koup bodyshell features new engine bay bulkhead bracing linked to two new longitudinal chassis members each side of the central tunnel. New connections are fitted between the B-Pillar and roof rail, while 60 kgf steel is used for the anti-intrusion door beams and 150 kgf ultra high-tensile strength steel for the B-pillars.

Hot stamping is used to manufacture the Koup’s B-pillars. This method heats steel to 900º C, then rapidly cools the steel, while simultaneously pressing it into immensely strong components with greatly enhanced crashworthiness – without adding weight.

The Koup’s new structure also benefits from additional cross members linking the front suspension towers, rear suspension mounting points and under the rear parcel shelf.

Torsional rigidity of the new Koup bodyshell is increased by 37% (over the previous model), bringing the added benefits of improving refinement and creating a stronger foundation for the suspension and steering – in turn enhancing ride comfort and steering precision.

At the front, new ‘crash boxes’ are fitted to the longitudinal engine bay side members, reducing low-speed impact damage and the rear chassis side members are strengthened – minimizing distortion and reducing repair costs. At the rear, an additional benefit of the CTBA rear suspension layout is that its robust structure provides the under-seat fuel tank with added protection during a rear impact.

Active safety technologies are all standard fare in Australian Koups with ESC (electronic stability control), HAC (hill-start assist control), VSM (vehicle stability management) and ESS (emergency stop signalling) all working to keep the Koup occupants out of trouble .

Front and rear parking sensors are also standard along with six airbags – dual front airbags, front side airbags and side curtain airbags.

Mazda6 Turbo Diesel dominating INDY!

Diesels Return to Indy After 60 Years – AND WIN

Mazda 6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel wins at the Brickyard

Text By: Agustin Jimenez, Monica Gonderman

It’s been over 60 years since a diesel powered race car hit the track at Indy but this week, Mazda is bringing the heat to the Brickyard with their Mazda-6 SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel Race Car. The last diesel to compete at Indy was the 1952 Cummins Diesel Special #28 Indycar and it shocked everyone and demonstrated how powerful a diesel engine could be by breaking lap time records right off the first lap of qualifying.

60 years later, Mazda is bringing diesels back to the Brickyard for this week’s Grand-Am race in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Mazda-6 Grand-Am GX cars are powered by a SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel 2.2-liter inline-4 cylinder dual-turbo common rail, direct injected diesel engine that produces 400 horsepower at 5000 RPM as well as 445 pound feet of torque at 3600 RPM.

2014 Mazda 6 SKYACTIV D Clean Diesel Grand AM GX Engine

Although the Mazda-6 Grand-Am cars are far more technologically advanced than the 1952 Cummins Diesel Special race car, they both share the same vision of showing up to Indy with a diesel than can run circles around the competition while testing production technology in the harshest of environments.

While most people correctly associate racing with fast cars, it is far more complex than just raw speed. The best race cars have been modified for efficiency in every conceivable area. Decreasing weight, friction, and aero drag are key elements to performance. Less obvious to non-race fans is the fact that better fuel economy can mean the difference between winning and losing as fewer pit stops can often determine the winner in endurance races.

The all-new SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel engine in the all-new Mazda-6 is a true production based engine. The engine is 51 percent stock by parts count, and 63 percent stock by weight. Mazda chose this path as it is the most honest way to demonstrate the quality, durability, and reliability of Mazda cars.

“This year has been one for the record books. In January, our SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel Mazda6 became the first diesel racecar to ever compete at Daytona. In April, we became the first ever diesel to score a Grand-Am win at Road Atlanta. Now, we are about to bring clean diesel to one of the most famous proving grounds in the world, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Being students of motorsports heritage, it wasn’t lost on us that the last diesel to compete at Indy, a Cummins, made a strong impact in the 1950’s, hence our interest in looking at the state of the art from the past with our latest innovation,” noted John Doonan, Motorsports Director, Mazda North American Operations.

EGR Night Racer concept based on the Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo

[01.10.13]

Hyundai Night Racer Veloster SR Turbo for SEMA Show

30 September 2013 – EGR Group, a leading OEM and aftermarket accessory supplier for nearly four decades, is developing a custom EGR Night Racer concept based on the Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo that is guaranteed to turn heads. The racecar, designed specifically for time attack races at night racing circuits, will be showcased at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas, 5-8 November.

Hyundai-veloster-turbo-02

The EGR Night Racer’s most compelling cosmetic upgrade is a unique vivid yellow paint scheme. This custom-developed colour, dubbed Yellowcake, was created by EGR in collaboration with the paint experts at PPG and Barry’s Speed Shop. With the addition of a Wurton roof-mounted LED light bar and custom ONEighty-branded headlights, the EGR Night Racer will be impossible to miss, especially on night racing circuits.

Modifications to the EGR Night Racer go far beyond cosmetics. Body rigidity has been increased significantly with the addition of a custom roll cage, and ride height is race-tuned with an ARK coil-over suspension and AEM strut brace. Bisimoto Engineering provided powertrain tuning expertise, boosting the 1.6 litre output to over 185kW, while oversized Brembo brakes, DPE 3-piece racing wheels and Toyo semi-slick racing tires ensure the power is kept under precise control.

“Veloster SR Turbo provides an ideal tuning platform for enthusiasts who want to modify their cars,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “EGR created a very special night-focused time attack car that perfectly showcases Veloster SR Turbo’s inherently sporty DNA.”

The BMW i8 (09/2013)

The BMW i8: a new generation sports car.
The BMW i8 is a 2+2-seater with visionary design and intelligent lightweight construction, which opens the door to both emission-free driving on city roads and sports performance on country roads and motorways. As a new generation sports car, it embodies BMW’s hallmark driving pleasure with a new premium character that is strongly defined by sustainability.

201308-P90131414-thumb-orig

Its plug-in hybrid system consists of a highly turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system likewise developed by the BMW Group, both of which interact via intelligent energy management.

The 1.5-litre combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometres (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

201309-P90133051-zoom-orig

Munich. The present and future of driving pleasure converge in the new models presented by the BMW and BMW i brands at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2013 in Frankfurt am Main. One of the highlights of the world’s most important car show this year is the joint premiere of the BMW i3 and BMW i8. The BMW Group’s first purely electrically powered vehicle to go into series production and the world’s most forward-looking sports car showcase the future focus, universal appeal and broad spread of the BMW i brand. The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car conceived from the ground up to deliver electric mobility and emission-free driving in urban areas. With its eye on maximising efficiency both within the city limits and beyond, the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid combines the dynamic capability of a high-performance sports car with fuel consumption and emissions you would normally expect from a small car. Both models feature a passenger cell made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and BMW eDrive technology that enables them to be driven on electric power alone.

201309-P90132815-thumb-orig

BMW Motorrad, meanwhile, is using the IAA 2013 to present an urban mobility solution already available to customers but which continues to shine a light into the future. The BMW C evolution is the brand’s first all-electric motorbike. Conceived for zero-emission journeys through urban areas, the maxi-scooter celebrates its world premiere in Frankfurt. It is fitted with an electric motor and a lithium-ion high-voltage battery, whose qualities are underpinned by the BMW Group’s impressive development expertise – also used for BMW i cars – in the area of sustainable drive system technology.

A new chapter in the history of elegantly sporty, two-door BMWs, meanwhile, begins with the world premiere of the BMW 4 Series Coupe at the IAA 2013. The new model embodies the ultimate in aesthetic appeal and driving pleasure in the premium mid-size segment. Likewise setting the pace in its class is the BMW X5, the third generation of which takes to the stage in Frankfurt alongside the new BMW 5 Series models and new BMW X5 M50d, BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and BMW M550d xDrive Touring M Performance Automobiles. BMW is also presenting two concept studies to underline its expertise and creativity – both in the area of drive system technology and in its push into new vehicle segments. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive combines the typical driving characteristics of a Sports Activity Vehicle with the efficiency benefits of a plug-in hybrid drive system. The BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor, meanwhile, demonstrates how a premium compact model’s ability to adapt to the varying requirements of sports and leisure activities can be maximised through a well-devised use of space and clever detail solutions.

Also on show at the IAA 2013 are the latest innovations developed under the Efficient Dynamics banner, attractive new Original BMW Accessories and the most recent additions to the BMW ConnectedDrive line-up. The selection of driver assistance systems and mobility services underpinned by intelligent connectivity is now even richer in variety. A number of services tailored specifically to the demands of electric mobility and urban driving have been developed for BMW i automobiles. Added to which, a restructuring of the BMW ConnectedDrive range brings even greater flexibility and convenience to the business of meeting individual customer requirements.

201309-P90133049-zoom-orig

The new products and services can be found at the combined BMW, BMW i, MINI and Rolls-Royce stand in Hall 11, which is located next to the exhibition centre’s main entrance. There will also be an opportunity to experience the cars in action, allowing IAA visitors to sample BMW’s hallmark driving pleasure up close and in depth from 12 – 22 September 2013.

The BMW i3: zero-emission mobility, customary BMW driving pleasure.
The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car conceived from the ground up to provide all-electric mobility. Its electric motor develops output of 125 kW/170 hp using power supplied by a lithium-ion battery pack mounted in a low, central position in the car’s underbody. Like the extraordinarily light yet extremely rigid CFRP passenger cell, the electric drive system and battery were also developed and produced by the BMW Group. The BMW i3 weighs just 1,195 kilograms (DIN kerb weight) and offers a range of 130 – 160 kilometres (approx. 80 – 100 miles) in everyday driving. This can be increased to a maximum 300 kilometres (approx. 180 miles) if the two-cylinder range extender combustion engine is specified.

The BMW i3 is based on a new kind of vehicle architecture. The LifeDrive concept underpins the car’s visionary form, which is defined by a standalone design language and generous levels of space for all four seats. A signature theme of the BMW i brand is the thread of sustainability running throughout the value chain. For example, the carbon fibres for the passenger cell are manufactured at Moses Lake in the USA using hydro power alone, while the energy required for production of BMW i cars at BMW Plant Leipzig is generated 100 per cent by purpose-built wind turbines.

BMW 4 Series Coupe: the perfect balance of aesthetic appeal and dynamic capability.
Perfectly balanced proportions, a low centre of gravity and powerful engines enable the BMW 4 Series Coupe to raise the bar in its segment in terms of aesthetics and dynamics. The individual identity of the two-door model – underlined by the “4” in its nameplate – is reflected both in its design and in its top-quality equipment features. BMW 4 Series Coupe customers can choose from one six-cylinder and two four-cylinder engines at launch, and the Sport Line, Modern Line, Luxury Line and M Sport packages are also available as alternatives to standard specification.

The new BMW X5: the quintessential Sports Activity Vehicle is more luxurious and innovative than ever.
The BMW X5 was the world’s first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and remains the most successful to this day. The launch of the third-generation model sets a new agenda in its class in terms of driving pleasure, variability and luxury. Among the stand-out characteristics of the new BMW X5 are its enhanced sports performance and reduced fuel consumption, an eye-catching and aerodynamically optimised design, a weight saving of up to 90 kg over a comparably equipped corresponding model from the previous series and a wealth of innovations from BMW ConnectedDrive.

BMW Concept X5 eDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive meets innovative hybrid technology.
BMW is also using the IAA 2013 to present a new way of further reducing the fuel consumption and emissions of an SAV. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive combines the familiar brand of driving pleasure provided by the intelligent all-wheel-drive system xDrive and a luxurious ambience with a plug-in hybrid drive concept that delivers familiar BMW sporting attributes, the ability to hit speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) on electric power alone and average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp). The study car’s drive system comprises a four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo combustion engine and a 70 kW/95 hp electric motor, likewise developed by the BMW Group.

BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor: clever solutions for driving pleasure and leisure activities.
Compact exterior dimensions, impressive interior space and clever solutions aimed at enhancing sports and leisure-related functionality define the character of the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor. BMW is using this vehicle concept to introduce the brand’s hallmark driving pleasure into a new segment. A bicycle carrier fully integrated into the interior serves the cause of optimum space utilisation. And also breaking new ground is the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor’s plug-in hybrid drive technology.

The new BMW 5 Series: fresh impetus on the road to global success.
The BMW 5 Series, the world’s best-selling car at the premium end of the executive segment, continues along its successful path with modifications to various design details, additional drive system variants and a host of innovations from BMW ConnectedDrive. The new BMW 518d – available in Sedan and Touring form – now marks the entry point to BMW 5 Series ownership, and the BMW 520d xDrive has been added to the line-up of all-wheel-drive models. Elsewhere, the new rear-end design of the luxurious and versatile BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo injects extra elegance into the car’s lines and expands its boot capacity by 60 litres.

BMW C evolution: premiere for zero-emission riding pleasure.
The IAA also sees BMW Motorrad opening a new chapter in its Urban Mobility project. The BMW C evolution combines riding fun and dynamics with the benefits of a zero-emission vehicle to provide an entirely new experience on two wheels. The brand’s first all-electric production model also enriches the maxi scooter segment with its inspirational design and innovative features.

The BMW C evolution is powered by a drivetrain swing arm with a liquid-cooled synchronous electric motor via a toothed belt and ring gearing. The electric vehicle has a continuous output of 11 kW/15 hp, with peak output rising to 35 kW/47.5 hp. It gives the BMW C evolution powerful acceleration and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). The motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion high-voltage battery whose capacity of 8 kWh allows a range of up to 100 kilometres (62 miles) and which can be recharged at a conventional household power socket.
