The BMW M Diesel triple-turbo is extremely high tech.

This BMW M diesel TTT seriously seduces with its output.

With a specific output of 127 hp/liter, the new M diesel matches the new M5’s mill for power output.

Stunning, and yes… dead sexy.   By bmwblog.com

381 hp will be ample to get the job done, and this is already seen from the provisional 0-60 times stated in the press material, showing the M550d sedan making the sprint in a scant 4.7 seconds. A driveshaft knotting 546 lb-ft of torque is always at the ready, and we know exactly how much fun this figure will be in practice. Clearly, this engine will add life to its chassis, and become one with the driving experience.

Opposite Lock: M Diesels Take the Stage

The triple-turbo is extremely high tech. From its common-rail fuel injection pressures of nearly 32,000 psi to its three separate variable-vane twin-scroll turbos, this engine oozes sophistication. It is proudly the most advanced diesel on sale and given its all-aluminum architecture and brilliant performance, I feel the new 3.0 liter is at least as sexy as its inline 6 gasoline stable mates. Actually, I feel it’s considerably more exotic.

Until we get behind the wheel we cannot conclusively offer our opinion of the new M diesel, but given the above, we’re quite confident it will impress. We are confident it will feel special, as an M engine should. Perhaps it would feel even more special in a lighter chassis. We know it could fit – why not toss it in the 3 series’ engine bay? The M335d. That could spice things up a bit – mindful of the 546 lb-ft of torque on tap. If the whole car was put on a diet and weighed-in less than the current M3, we might even place bets on it being faster. For that matter, throw it in the 1 series. The 1Md. Think the 1M is a lunatic? Imagine the performance! And yes, give us a manual – we would thoroughly enjoy being one with this engine, connecting through the gated stick-shift.

Think we’re jumping on a band wagon? Think again – http://www.bmwblog.com published this article over two years ago, advocating for an M diesel based on the incredible performance BMW have been able to extract thanks to advanced diesel technology.

We look forward to bringing you the latest coverage of the new M diesels and indeed, showcasing their performance through video, photos and words.

2014 May-Hockenheim: Marco Wittmann guides the BMW M4 DTM Turbo to its maiden victory

Historic victory in Hockenheim: Marco Wittmann guides the BMW M4 DTM to its maiden victory at the DTM season-opener.

Hockenheim (DE), 4th May 2014. First race, first win: the new BMW M4 DTM opened its career with a dream result in Hockenheim (DE). After 42 laps of the 4.574-kilometre circuit, Marco Wittmann (DE) crossed the finish line first in the Ice-Watch BMW M4 DTM, as the DTM opened its anniversary season with an eventful race. Not only was it the 24-year-old’s first triumph in only his 11th DTM race, but also the maiden victory for BMW Team RMG and BMW’s 60th win in the series.

On 11th March 1984, over 30 years ago, it was Harald Grohs (DE) at the wheel of the BMW 635 CSi who won the very first race in the history of the DTM for BMW in Zolder. Three years later, Grohs also won when the new BMW M3 made its debut in Hockenheim. Wittmann’s success saw the BMW M4 DTM continue this tradition of new cars winning on their debut.

2014-BMW-M4-DTM-02

Six of the eight BMW M4 DTMs finished the race in the points. Timo Glock (DE) came home fifth in the DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM, followed by Bruno Spengler (CA) in the BMW Bank M4 DTM, Martin Tomczyk (DE) in the BMW M Performance Parts M4 DTM and Augusto Farfus (BR) at the wheel of the Castrol EDGE BMW M4 DTM in places six through to eight. Joey Hand (US) also picked up a point, crossing the finish line in tenth in the Crowne Plaza Hotels BMW M4 DTM.

The two rookies, Maxime Martin (BE) and António Félix da Costa (PT), remain yet to score their first points, having ended their DTM debuts in 20th and 21st respectively. Félix da Costa was enjoying an outstanding race in his Red Bull BMW M4 DTM, and was in reach for a podium position for long periods. However, a collision with Timo Scheider (DE, Audi) and the subsequent drive-through penalty saw the Portuguese driver drop well back. Problems with a loose wheel after his pit top, coupled with the ensuing drive-through penalty, cost Martin any chance of a better result.

Jens Marquardt (BMW Motorsport Director):
“What a dream debut weekend for the BMW M4 DTM. To return to Hockenheim with the brand-new BMW M4 DTM and win the first race, half a year after the last victory with the BMW M3 DTM – it doesn’t get much better. At the same time, it is also a great maiden win for BMW Team RMG and Marco Wittmann, who drove an absolutely incredible race and was in a league of his own today. He controlled the entire race magnificently. It was a joy to watch him. However, there is also a lot of work behind this win. On the one hand, our team at BMW Motorsport has been working hard on the BMW M4 DTM for over a year. You never know exactly how good you are compared to the opposition until the first race. Therefore, we are very happy today. Also particularly worthy of mention is the fact that Stefan Reinhold’s entire team did a lot of testing and made some changes on the test bench over the winter – with great success, as you can see. They deserve a big compliment. We are also pleased to see a further five BMWs in the top ten, and with the 60th victory for BMW in the history of the DTM – in bright sunshine and in front of a big crowd in the grandstands. I feel sorry for António Félix da Costa who, up until the incident, had produced a very impressive DTM debut.”

About the DTM.
The German Touring Car Masters – DTM for short – is the most popular touring car series in the world. Last season, over 700,000 spectators flocked to renowned racetracks in Germany and around Europe to watch the ten races live. The series pits the three premium automobile manufacturers BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz against each other in a sporting contest. BMW fielded its first works teams from 1984 to 1992, during which time it claimed 49 race victories and won the Drivers’ Championship on three occasions (1984, 1987 and 1989). In 2012, the manufacturer returned to the DTM with the BMW M3 DTM, three teams and six drivers. BMW promptly won five races and topped the driver, team and manufacturer standings at the end of the season. In 2013, BMW Motorsport managed to defend the Manufacturer’s title with four teams and eight drivers. The 2014 DTM calendar once again consists of ten races. The schedule includes four trips abroad, to Budapest (HU), Spielberg (AT), Moscow (RU) and Guangzhou (CN). The season traditionally ends in Hockenheim (DE) on 19th October. TV station ARD is broadcasting each qualifying and every race live. Tickets for all the DTM races are available here: http://www.bmw-motorsport.com/en/fan-area/dtm-tickets.html

Following in the tradition of the successful BMW touring cars of the 1970s, the BMW design team has created an uncompromising road racer for the modern era. Crisp proportions and a dynamic silhouette give the BMW Vision Gran Turismo the appearance of speed, even standing still. Front and rear spoilers ensure optimum down-force, while all air conduction elements reduce drag and lower the vehicle’s total weight through the use of carbon fibre. The paint finish in BMW M colours traces the flow of the airstream, recalling BMW Motorsports successes. Karim Habib, Head of Design BMW Automobiles said: “The BMW Vision Gran Turismo is pure BMW sportiness and dynamics. It’s a precise driving machine engineered and designed to race and win.”

The technology in the BMW Vision Gran Turismo is just as impressive as its uncompromising design. A powerful three-litre six-cylinder inline engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers a maximum power of 404 kW/549 hp between 6,200 min-1 and 7,300 min-1. Its peak torque of 680 Nm is developed at just 1,900 rpm. A sequential six-speed transmission, operated by gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, distributes engine power to the driven rear axle. The outstanding performance characteristics of the BMW Vision Gran Turismo, which weighs only 1,180 kilograms, include perfect 50:50 axle load distribution.

The BMW Group demonstrates its on-going commitment to the gaming field. The growing relevance of the video game market and its active gaming community means that concepts such as the BMW Vision Gran Turismo, as well as classic and current BMW vehicles, can not only be presented passively in images or trailers, but also experienced in an interactive manner by a wide audience and even taken for a virtual drive.

To mark the game’s 15th anniversary last year, Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo® creator and president of Polyphony Digital Inc., invited leading automobile manufacturers to contribute to the successful game series. Design departments were called upon to look into the future and share their ground-breaking concept models with the gaming community. The virtual cars will be gradually integrated into the new Gran Turismo® 6 game through online updates. “I was eagerly awaiting what kind of car the people at BMW would come up with. The resulting Vision Gran Turismo car was a sports car that was so clearly BMW, that really shows the DNA of BMW. What makes the Vision GT car so recognizable as a BMW, is in things like its compact size, its wide front and rear overfenders. It maintains the strong angular forms from the past, but the car is also given modern, elegant lines”, said Yamauchi. Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design added: „This project means a lot to me, because Kazunori-san shares the same passion for design and driving pleasure as we do at BMW Group. We are pleased to present our very first virtual BMW concept car at GT6.”

The Gran Turismo® video game, first released in 1998, is an award-winning racing simulation. The series is one of the biggest virtual racing games worldwide and PlayStation’s most successful franchise. A wide range of realistic racetrack options and authentic-looking HD graphic images characterise the game. According to Sony Computer Entertainment, the complete series has sold over 70 million games in more than 100 countries to date.

2014 BMW M235i Racing M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology.

STRONG TwinPower Turbo MOTORSPORT GENES.

BMW Motorsport is expanding its range of cars within the BMW Sports Trophy Customer Racing programme.

2014-BMW-235i-M-turbo-0

From 2014, privateer BMW teams and drivers will have the opportunity to line up at events with the new BMW M235i Racing. Powered by the most powerful petrol engine developed so far for a BMW M Performance Automobile: a six-cylinder in-line engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. With a price of 59,500.00 Euros (excl. VAT) and impressive performance figures, the production-based coupé meets all the basic requirements of a successful entry-level racing car.

The plan is initially for the car to be used in series and events such as the VLN Endurance Championship and the Nürburgring 24 Hours on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Looking ahead, the BMW M235i Racing should also be successful on international stages for BMW Sports Trophy drivers.

The motorsport genes are also easily recognisable in the production version of the BMW M235i Coupé, courtesy of the aerodynamically optimised body design. It is propelled by the most powerful petrol engine developed so far for a BMW M Performance Automobile: a six-cylinder in-line engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. With a capacity of 2,979ccm, the racing version is capable of generating 333hp (245kW).

2014-BMW-235i-M-turbo-02

Motorsport-specific driving aids such as ABS, DSC and traction control ensure that the motorsport newcomers can also handle the BMW M235i Racing surely and safely. The car also comes with mechanical limited-slip differential, which is also available for the BMW M235i Coupé in the original BMW Parts range. The racing car is also fitted with features such as the FIA-certified safety cell and the modern safety tank. On top of this come components from the BMW M Performance Parts range, such as the rear and front spoilers, diffusor and carbon wing mirrors.

BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt says:
“The basis our engineers had to start with when developing the racing version of the BMW M235i Coupé was exceptionally good. The production models from the BMW M Performance Automobiles range are already incredibly sporty. Because of this, we did not have to make many modifications in order to get the BMW M235i Coupé up and running as a racing car. BMW Motorsport can look back on a long tradition of allowing ambitious teams and drivers an affordable way into motor racing – and of offering them an absolutely competitive car. While the BMW Z4 GT3 spearheads our range, the new BMW M235i Racing means we are now also excellently positioned for the coming years in the field of production-based racing cars.”

2014 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe feature the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology

The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe feature the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe – M Sport package (02/2014). 2014-BMW-4-series-gran-coupe-m-sport-turbo-02 BMW proudly presents the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. All diesel and petrol engines feature the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and comply with the EU6 emissions standard. The ultramodern engines combine impressive elasticity and dynamics with very low fuel consumption and emissions.(combined fuel consumption: 8.1–4.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 189–119 g/km), the first four-door coupé in the premium midsize class that represents a consistent extension of the model range.

Following the launch of the BMW 4 Series Coupé and Convertible, the Gran Coupé is the third model to join the new BMW 4 Series, which is longer, wider and more dynamic than any of the previous midsize series due to the balanced proportions of the vehicles. The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé combines the sleek look of a two-door coupé with the functionality provided by four-doors and expansive spaciousness, including a wide-access luggage compartment. New standard of elegance and extravagance in the midsize class.

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé has exactly the same dimensions as the two-door coupé: a length of 4,638 millimeters, a width of 1,825 millimeters and a wheelbase of 2,810 millimeters. Up front, both models are identical and share the typical BMW design features like the double-kidney grille, dual round headlights and the large air intake in the front apron. However, the roof of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is twelve millimeters higher, 112 mm longer and gently stretched allowing it to flow smoothly into the rear quarter panels and boot lid. The typical BMW short overhangs, the long bonnet and the set-back passenger compartment complement the design of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé to express perfect balance combined with a bold presence.

This extended roofline highlights the elegance and sophistication of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, while setting new standards for aesthetics in the midsize class that also have decisive practical advantages. For example, there is more headroom in the interior, not to mention added comfort. The boot volume of 480 liters is 35 liters larger than that of the two-door version for more convenience in meeting the challenges of everyday driving situations with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. 2014-BMW-4-gran-coupe-Turbo-m-sport-01 Dynamic and elegant concept with functional elements. When compared with a two-door coupé, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé offers passengers easier access when entering or leaving the vehicle thanks to the four-door configuration. The doors are frameless, having the characteristic design features of BMW midsize coupés that emphasize the elegance of the vehicle concept. The functional elegance of the 4+1 seater is highlighted by prominent round instruments with a black panel look and the free-standing flat-screen iDrive monitor. The wide-access boot opening and spacious luggage area makes loading and unloading much easier. The 40:20:40 split folding backrest of the rear seat ensures added flexibility. The maximum volume of the boot is 1,300 liters and is best-in-class when it comes to the premium four-door coupés currently offered. The boot lid is equipped as standard with an automatic opening and closing mechanism for maximum convenience, and the Smart Opener feature can be ordered to open and close the lid with a movement of the foot. Wide-ranging customizing options offered by three special equipment packages, the M Sport package and the BMW Individual program.

The interior of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé represents elegance and sophistication combined with outstanding ergonomics. All controls are configured to give the driver optimal access to them. An approach known as layering – the intelligent utilization of space through the structuring of lines and surfaces into layers – expresses the hallmark BMW driver focus. Lines from the cockpit stretch along the front doors and the B column into the rear passenger compartment. They create a sense of unity encompassing the front and back seats, as do the seamless transitions formed by the interior door panels. The shape of the rear bench seat resembles the look of two individual seats, but the upholstered “console surface” between them can also accommodate a third passenger in the middle (4+1 seater). Extraordinary material combinations and unrivalled quality of workmanship define the premium ambience on board the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.

The standard model variant, plus three optional equipment packages and the M Sport package, leave no wishes unfulfilled for drivers wanting a special look and feel. The BMW Individual program offered at market launch includes options for creating an exclusive vehicle with special leather interior packages, exterior colors and 19-inch light-alloy wheels. Four and six-cylinder petrol engines, plus two four-cylinder diesel engines available at model launch. T

he new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé offers a choice of five powerful, cultivated and efficient engines. The high-end is represented by the 435i’s six-cylinder in-line 3.0-liter petrol engine delivering 225 kW/306 hp (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 11.4/6.2/8.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 189 g/km). The BMW 428i Gran Coupé (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 8.9/5.3/6.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 154 g/km)and the BMW 420i Gran Coupé (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 8.7/5.1/6.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 149 g/km) are equipped with light and powerful four-cylinder engines that deliver 180 kW/245 hp and 135 kW/184 hp, respectively. Like all BMW diesel variants, the two four-cylinder engines offered for the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé are known for their smoothness, torque and outstanding efficiency. The BMW 420d Gran Coupé (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 5.8/4.1/4.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 124 g/km) delivers 135 kW/184 hp with an average fuel consumption, depending on tires, of only 4.7 to 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers (4.6 to 4.7 liters with sport automatic transmission) and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in only 7.7 seconds (7.5 seconds with sport automatic transmission). The engine in the BMW 418d Gran Coupé (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 5.4/4.0/4.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 119 g/km) has an output of 105 kW/143 hp and consumes 4.5 to 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

All diesel and petrol engines feature the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and comply with the EU6 emissions standard.

The ultramodern engines combine impressive elasticity and dynamics with very low fuel consumption and emissions. xDrive and two Steptronic transmissions are available. At model launch, the BMW 428i Gran Coupé and 420d Gran Coupé can be optionally equipped with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive technology. (428i xDrive: fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 9.0/5.5/6.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 159 g/km; 420d xDrive: fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 6.1/4.2/4.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emission: 129 g/km) The standard variant of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé features a six-speed manual transmission, but all engines can be combined with the optional eight-speed Steptronic or eight-speed sport Steptronic transmissions, which also feature manual shifting using paddles on the steering wheel. BMW EfficientDynamics – sporty performance, low consumption. The elegant and dynamic character of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is accompanied by excellent economy and efficiency. The source of this low fuel consumption can be traced to the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, with wide-ranging innovations for intelligent mobility. These innovations include the optimized fuel economy of the petrol and diesel engines, the lightweight construction concept and honed aerodynamics with features such as a smooth covered underbody and the use of Air Curtains and Air Breathers. Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start Stop function, the gear shift indicator and ancillary components that are activated on-demand also contribute to fuel savings and reduced emissions. Automatic transmissions (Steptronic) can also reduce consumption with coasting mode, and even more is possible with ECO PRO mode.

BMW ConnectedDrive – 100 percent connectivity.

The entire range of BMW ConnectedDrive options can be ordered for the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. Among the highlights are the Navigation System Professional, the full-color BMW Head-Up Display, Driving Assistant, the glare-free High Beam Assistant, Active Protection and the latest development stage of the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. Innovative interface technology also permits easy integration of smartphones in the vehicles. This supports the use of the dynamically growing selection of apps available, for example, from Audible or Deezer, for various purposes in the vehicles.

The BMW i8 (09/2013)

The BMW i8: a new generation sports car.
The BMW i8 is a 2+2-seater with visionary design and intelligent lightweight construction, which opens the door to both emission-free driving on city roads and sports performance on country roads and motorways. As a new generation sports car, it embodies BMW’s hallmark driving pleasure with a new premium character that is strongly defined by sustainability.

201308-P90131414-thumb-orig

Its plug-in hybrid system consists of a highly turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system likewise developed by the BMW Group, both of which interact via intelligent energy management.

The 1.5-litre combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometres (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

201309-P90133051-zoom-orig

Munich. The present and future of driving pleasure converge in the new models presented by the BMW and BMW i brands at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2013 in Frankfurt am Main. One of the highlights of the world’s most important car show this year is the joint premiere of the BMW i3 and BMW i8. The BMW Group’s first purely electrically powered vehicle to go into series production and the world’s most forward-looking sports car showcase the future focus, universal appeal and broad spread of the BMW i brand. The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car conceived from the ground up to deliver electric mobility and emission-free driving in urban areas. With its eye on maximising efficiency both within the city limits and beyond, the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid combines the dynamic capability of a high-performance sports car with fuel consumption and emissions you would normally expect from a small car. Both models feature a passenger cell made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and BMW eDrive technology that enables them to be driven on electric power alone.

201309-P90132815-thumb-orig

BMW Motorrad, meanwhile, is using the IAA 2013 to present an urban mobility solution already available to customers but which continues to shine a light into the future. The BMW C evolution is the brand’s first all-electric motorbike. Conceived for zero-emission journeys through urban areas, the maxi-scooter celebrates its world premiere in Frankfurt. It is fitted with an electric motor and a lithium-ion high-voltage battery, whose qualities are underpinned by the BMW Group’s impressive development expertise – also used for BMW i cars – in the area of sustainable drive system technology.

A new chapter in the history of elegantly sporty, two-door BMWs, meanwhile, begins with the world premiere of the BMW 4 Series Coupe at the IAA 2013. The new model embodies the ultimate in aesthetic appeal and driving pleasure in the premium mid-size segment. Likewise setting the pace in its class is the BMW X5, the third generation of which takes to the stage in Frankfurt alongside the new BMW 5 Series models and new BMW X5 M50d, BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and BMW M550d xDrive Touring M Performance Automobiles. BMW is also presenting two concept studies to underline its expertise and creativity – both in the area of drive system technology and in its push into new vehicle segments. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive combines the typical driving characteristics of a Sports Activity Vehicle with the efficiency benefits of a plug-in hybrid drive system. The BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor, meanwhile, demonstrates how a premium compact model’s ability to adapt to the varying requirements of sports and leisure activities can be maximised through a well-devised use of space and clever detail solutions.

Also on show at the IAA 2013 are the latest innovations developed under the Efficient Dynamics banner, attractive new Original BMW Accessories and the most recent additions to the BMW ConnectedDrive line-up. The selection of driver assistance systems and mobility services underpinned by intelligent connectivity is now even richer in variety. A number of services tailored specifically to the demands of electric mobility and urban driving have been developed for BMW i automobiles. Added to which, a restructuring of the BMW ConnectedDrive range brings even greater flexibility and convenience to the business of meeting individual customer requirements.

The new products and services can be found at the combined BMW, BMW i, MINI and Rolls-Royce stand in Hall 11, which is located next to the exhibition centre’s main entrance. There will also be an opportunity to experience the cars in action, allowing IAA visitors to sample BMW’s hallmark driving pleasure up close and in depth from 12 – 22 September 2013.

The BMW i3: zero-emission mobility, customary BMW driving pleasure.
The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car conceived from the ground up to provide all-electric mobility. Its electric motor develops output of 125 kW/170 hp using power supplied by a lithium-ion battery pack mounted in a low, central position in the car’s underbody. Like the extraordinarily light yet extremely rigid CFRP passenger cell, the electric drive system and battery were also developed and produced by the BMW Group. The BMW i3 weighs just 1,195 kilograms (DIN kerb weight) and offers a range of 130 – 160 kilometres (approx. 80 – 100 miles) in everyday driving. This can be increased to a maximum 300 kilometres (approx. 180 miles) if the two-cylinder range extender combustion engine is specified.

The BMW i3 is based on a new kind of vehicle architecture. The LifeDrive concept underpins the car’s visionary form, which is defined by a standalone design language and generous levels of space for all four seats. A signature theme of the BMW i brand is the thread of sustainability running throughout the value chain. For example, the carbon fibres for the passenger cell are manufactured at Moses Lake in the USA using hydro power alone, while the energy required for production of BMW i cars at BMW Plant Leipzig is generated 100 per cent by purpose-built wind turbines.

BMW 4 Series Coupe: the perfect balance of aesthetic appeal and dynamic capability.
Perfectly balanced proportions, a low centre of gravity and powerful engines enable the BMW 4 Series Coupe to raise the bar in its segment in terms of aesthetics and dynamics. The individual identity of the two-door model – underlined by the “4” in its nameplate – is reflected both in its design and in its top-quality equipment features. BMW 4 Series Coupe customers can choose from one six-cylinder and two four-cylinder engines at launch, and the Sport Line, Modern Line, Luxury Line and M Sport packages are also available as alternatives to standard specification.

The new BMW X5: the quintessential Sports Activity Vehicle is more luxurious and innovative than ever.
The BMW X5 was the world’s first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and remains the most successful to this day. The launch of the third-generation model sets a new agenda in its class in terms of driving pleasure, variability and luxury. Among the stand-out characteristics of the new BMW X5 are its enhanced sports performance and reduced fuel consumption, an eye-catching and aerodynamically optimised design, a weight saving of up to 90 kg over a comparably equipped corresponding model from the previous series and a wealth of innovations from BMW ConnectedDrive.

BMW Concept X5 eDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive meets innovative hybrid technology.
BMW is also using the IAA 2013 to present a new way of further reducing the fuel consumption and emissions of an SAV. The BMW Concept X5 eDrive combines the familiar brand of driving pleasure provided by the intelligent all-wheel-drive system xDrive and a luxurious ambience with a plug-in hybrid drive concept that delivers familiar BMW sporting attributes, the ability to hit speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) on electric power alone and average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp). The study car’s drive system comprises a four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo combustion engine and a 70 kW/95 hp electric motor, likewise developed by the BMW Group.

BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor: clever solutions for driving pleasure and leisure activities.
Compact exterior dimensions, impressive interior space and clever solutions aimed at enhancing sports and leisure-related functionality define the character of the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor. BMW is using this vehicle concept to introduce the brand’s hallmark driving pleasure into a new segment. A bicycle carrier fully integrated into the interior serves the cause of optimum space utilisation. And also breaking new ground is the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor’s plug-in hybrid drive technology.

The new BMW 5 Series: fresh impetus on the road to global success.
The BMW 5 Series, the world’s best-selling car at the premium end of the executive segment, continues along its successful path with modifications to various design details, additional drive system variants and a host of innovations from BMW ConnectedDrive. The new BMW 518d – available in Sedan and Touring form – now marks the entry point to BMW 5 Series ownership, and the BMW 520d xDrive has been added to the line-up of all-wheel-drive models. Elsewhere, the new rear-end design of the luxurious and versatile BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo injects extra elegance into the car’s lines and expands its boot capacity by 60 litres.

BMW C evolution: premiere for zero-emission riding pleasure.
The IAA also sees BMW Motorrad opening a new chapter in its Urban Mobility project. The BMW C evolution combines riding fun and dynamics with the benefits of a zero-emission vehicle to provide an entirely new experience on two wheels. The brand’s first all-electric production model also enriches the maxi scooter segment with its inspirational design and innovative features.

The BMW C evolution is powered by a drivetrain swing arm with a liquid-cooled synchronous electric motor via a toothed belt and ring gearing. The electric vehicle has a continuous output of 11 kW/15 hp, with peak output rising to 35 kW/47.5 hp. It gives the BMW C evolution powerful acceleration and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph). The motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion high-voltage battery whose capacity of 8 kWh allows a range of up to 100 kilometres (62 miles) and which can be recharged at a conventional household power socket.

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive – Exterior (02/2011)

BMW Design Concept Cars.

Concept cars give free rein to the creativity of automotive designers. From electric drive systems through gull-wing doors to fabric outer skins – the concepts are always focused on the future and brimming with visionary potential. Concept cars serve a variety of purposes, whether they are conceived as design studies, to help develop and implement new technologies, or to visualise what form new production models will take.

Vision Cars.

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive (2011).

A sculpturesque study that gives concrete form to cutting-edge technologies and forward-looking ideas, and whose underlying notion is the intelligent integration of driver, vehicle and the outside world. This is immediately apparent from the display and control concept, the unique lighting design and the overtly dynamic styling. The design symbolises the bond between driver and vehicle, the dialogue between driver and front passenger, as well as how the vehicle occupants interact with their environment. An elaborate three-tier system of lighting is used to visualise the various functional aspects of BMW ConnectedDrive, namely comfort, safety and infotainment.

BMW 328 Hommage (2011).

The BMW 328 Hommage, which was unveiled to mark the 75th birthday of the legendary BMW 328 racing car, offers a modern-day interpretation of the original’s principles and character. The study shows what the BMW 328 might have looked like if it had been built nowadays using the latest technical know-how. The exterior and interior of today’s BMW 328 Hommage are largely made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). CFRP offers the ideal balance between weight and stability, being lighter than aluminium yet far stronger as well. Exquisite leather and aluminium in both a matt and a high-gloss black polished finish combine with the CFRP interior of the BMW 328 Hommage to convey the pure, reduced roadster character of the sports car from yesteryear.

BMW Vision EfficientDynamics (2009).

The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics fuses futuristic, aerodynamically streamlined design with a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. The layering technique is employed in its interior for the first time. By applying the principle of “form follows function” to every last detail, the design endows the study with a unique aesthetic appeal and a powerful emotional lure. On the outside, the body’s design has a distinctly technical bias that lends expression to its systematic lightweight engineering and aerodynamic prowess. At the same time, the brand’s trademark design idiom clearly signals sportiness and efficiency as well.

BMW Gina Light visionary model (2008).

With this model, BMW Group Design provides fresh impetus for a fundamental debate about exactly what characteristics will be influencing automotive development in tomorrow’s world. Built as more of a research subject than a concept vehicle, the GINA Light visionary model presents a vision of the future automobile based on a distinctive philosophy of its own. In the process, the study takes the limits of today’s materials and manufacturing processes and projects them far into the future. All of the innovations showcased in this model centre around the variable nature of forms and functions, with the focus placed on the driver’s individual requirements arising from a given situation or the demands of the prevailing driving conditions. The GINA Light visionary model thus features a virtually seamless outer skin, consisting of a flexible fabric material stretched over a movable substructure. Furthermore, functions are only enabled when they are actually needed. This brand new interpretation of familiar functional and structural concepts changes the way in which drivers experience their vehicle. The reduction to the essentials and adaptation to the driver’s wishes enhance the vehicle’s emotional appeal, thus fulfilling a key objective of the GINA philosophy.

BMW M1 Hommage (2008).

A design study built as a tribute to two of its predecessors: the BMW M1 (1978) and BMW Turbo (1972). The BMW M1 Hommage is impressive testimony to just how highly BMW design cherishes the brand’s heritage, and also demonstrates how this legacy can be turned into ideas for the future. It succeeds in harmoniously blending the proportions and styling cues of the BMW M1 with the surface language seen in the new BMW design line. This adds up to give the vehicle a scintillating, sporty and authentic emotive appeal.

BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia (2006).

The design of the BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia 2006 is a contemporary interpretation of the legendary BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé dating from 1940, and succeeds in contrasting the traditional with the futuristic. The concept car is a tribute to the skill, successes and visions of those motor racing pioneers, as given shape by their modern-day successors. The bodywork styling neatly balances the functional requirements relating to the positioning of the engine, powertrain units and passenger compartment with the requisite aerodynamic qualities to produce an extremely aesthetic whole. The BMW Concept Coupé instantly stands out as a highly dynamic road machine. And it is this purposeful look, dominated by dynamic lines and asymmetric forms, that injects the two-seater with its special allure.

BMW Turbo (1972).

The BMW Turbo is the first-ever concept car to have been built by BMW. The novel design of the world’s first safety sports car – which wasn’t merely a technology test bed but also a styling study – signalled an entirely new approach in the safety debate at the time. With its innovative and pioneering take on the fundamental concept of a modern car, it placed the occupant at the centre. High safety standards were highlighted by such attributes as good all-round visibility – blind spots were to be avoided as far as possible – or paintwork in striking Spectral Diamond Red with metallic effect. The safety features introduced in the BMW Turbo gradually filtered into BMW production cars, with the driver-oriented cockpit the first to be implemented. This revolutionary concept car boasted numerous innovations that are taken for granted today, including inertia-reel seat belts, for example. Indeed, the seat belts in the BMW Turbo had an added function: they closed the circuit to the ignition switch, which meant you could only drive the BMW Turbo with your seat belt on.

Near-production concept cars.

BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé (2012).

The BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé symbolises extra sportiness and exclusiveness, thereby clearly distinguishing itself from its 3 Series sibling. The concept car’s striking face is composed of crisp contours and multifaceted surfaces. The most eye-catching feature of the car’s nose beyond the familiar BMW double-kidney grille and twin circular headlights is the large air intake in the front apron. The athletic elegance of the model’s flanks stems from the flowing, classic BMW proportions and elongated silhouette.

BMW Concept Active Tourer (2012).

The harmoniously proportioned BMW Concept Active Tourer has an air of sporty elegance about it when viewed from any angle. It is concrete proof that compact dimensions, functionality and versatility are perfectly compatible with dynamic design. This plug-in hybrid proudly sports the highly expressive BMW front end that is a hallmark of the brand, while the rear clearly spells sportiness and elegance. When viewed in profile, the stretched silhouette with a suggestion of a wedge shape gives the BMW Concept Active Tourer a look of dynamism that is unrivalled in this class, even when stationary.

BMW Zagato Coupé (2012).

The BMW Zagato Coupé is a BMW as seen through the eyes of the Italian coachbuilder Zagato. The Zagato design blends styling cues taken from both companies to create an emotion-charged coupé. The sculptural and notably graphic distribution of visual mass is trademark Zagato and instantly lends the BMW Zagato Coupé its own special personality. The surface finish, on the other hand, is clearly inspired by BMW.

BMW Zagato Roadster (2012).

The BMW Zagato Roadster can be seen as a highly elegant interpretation of the BMW Zagato Coupé. The BMW Zagato Roadster is very three-dimensional, broad and powerfully formed at the front. The nose surges forward dynamically, dipping down close to the road, and allows the BMW Zagato Roadster to cut an agile figure, crouching as if about to pounce. Overall, the clearly defined distribution of visual mass and the eye-catching tail end with the hallmark
BMW surface treatment and design idiom endow the BMW Zagato Roadster with an athletic dynamism all of its own.

BMW Concept Gran Coupé (2010).

The BMW Concept Gran Coupé is the epitome of high-class elegance united with supreme dynamism. The study combines sedan-like sportiness and comfort with the qualities of a classic Gran Turismo, producing a blend that captures the very essence of BMW aesthetics.

BMW Concept 6 Series Coupé (2010).

This concept is the definitive sports car for connoisseurs of beauty with a penchant for luxury and groundbreaking technology. It symbolises the BMW design team’s driving passion for aesthetic style paired with dynamic performance. The design brings together sportiness and elegance with muscular proportions and precise lines that convey a sense of formidable acceleration even before a wheel is turned.

BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo (2009).

The BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo melds together elegance, spaciousness and adaptability. The characteristic attributes of a prestigious sedan, a contemporary, highly versatile Sports Activity Vehicle and a classic Gran Turismo have been reinterpreted to produce a thrilling combination, the likes of which have not been seen in any other car. The BMW Concept 5 Series Gran Turismo epitomises inner luxury and demonstrates experience through the senses being used as a stylistic device in design.

BMW Concept X1 (2008).

This concept car sees the BMW designers transfer the classic character traits and design idiom of a BMW X model to a new vehicle class. Sophistication, agility, versatility and premium quality are all clearly conveyed by the concept study’s design. Pitched as an innovative vehicle concept for the premium compact segment, the BMW Concept X1 redefines standards for cool elegance, trailblazing sophistication and flexible functionality.

BMW Concept CS (2007).

The BMW Concept CS is the vision for a four-door car that unites the prestige of a luxury Gran Turismo with the fascinating allure of a high-performance sports car. Highly expressive design, the most select materials and a build quality that strives for perfection are all testimony to BMW’s perception of premium quality. Inside, the concept is awash with a sense of stylish luxury and uncompromising classiness.

BMW Concept X6 (2007).

This near-production concept car is the world’s first ever Sports Activity Coupé. The concept study showcases BMW’s vision for a unique vehicle concept that builds on the distinctive design idiom of the BMW X models while training the spotlight firmly on sportiness and an elegant presence.

BMW Concept 1 Series tii (2007).

A design study focused purely on motor racing that is based on the BMW 1 Series Coupé. The BMW Concept 1 Series tii ties in with the tradition of compact, light and extremely sporty coupés from BMW, and can be seen as a new interpretation of classic BMW brand values.

BMW Concept Z4 Coupé (2005).

The BMW Concept Z4 Coupé has been closely geared to the sporty-minded driver and performance driving, and gives its occupants the feeling of being in direct proximity to the road as well as a sense of pure driving pleasure. The sensational aesthetic appeal of the BMW Concept Z4 Coupé manifests itself in the fascinating interplay between concave and convex surfaces that converge in striking lines. Not only does this give the body its own distinct character, it imbues it with a dynamism that is plainly visible even when stationary.

BMW xActivity (2003).

Conceived as an SAV, this study provides an impressive demonstration of how sporty driving dynamics, a wide spectrum of applications and the pleasure of open-air driving can be reconciled in a single vehicle. Designed as a “frame-structure convertible” with a highly distinctive roof construction, the BMW xActivity combines various components for enhanced driving pleasure, as well as incorporating a host of remarkable details that demonstrate its tremendous functionality.

BMW Concept Study CS1 (2002).

This concept study is intended to offer a preview of a future “small” BMW. The bond between elegant lightness and powerful dynamism is the defining element of the four-seater CS1 convertible study’s design. A broad shoulderline, curving side sills and imposing wheels clearly announce its performance abilities and sturdiness.

BMW X Coupé (2001).

The BMW X Coupé is a source of creative inspiration, a harbinger of BMW design in the 21st century. By fusing together a coupé and a cross-country vehicle it produces a pioneering design experience. The creative energy of the BMW X Coupé is evident in the highly expressive sculpting of its surfaces, whose quality continues to set BMW design apart even today. Asymmetric design details furthermore provide a deliberate break away from what people are used to seeing, as does the enthralling, reduced interior layout with its daring forms.

BMW Z9 Convertible (2000).

The focus of this study is clearly placed on an interior that makes motoring easier and allows the driver to concentrate on the basic tasks of driving courtesy of iDrive technology. The tautness in the surfaces and expressive lines traces the characteristic BMW profile from nose to tail. Simplification as well as emphasising and highlighting the key elements play a dominant role in the exterior’s design, too.

BMW Z9 Gran Turismo (1999).

This particular study serves to point the way ahead for automotive design in the 21st century. Clarity, dynamism and a technology that completely redefines the meaning of ergonomics for car design – BMW iDrive – are all merged together within the reduced design idiom of the BMW Z9 Gran Turismo.

The new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo adds an innovative new concept to the successful BMW 3 Series line-up. The third body variant in the current model family combines the Sedan’s dynamic, sporting genes with the practicality and versatility of the Touring, qualities which are backed up by a palpable increase in space and driving comfort. The Gran Turismo exudes aesthetic and emotional appeal, boasts a distinctive presence on the road and offers similarly pronounced driving pleasure. All of which allows the new Gran Turismo to make a compelling case for itself as both an elegant business carriage and a dynamic, comfortable tourer.

Typical BMW proportions, four doors with frameless windows, a coupe-style, gently downward-sloping roofline and a large, automatically opening and closing tailgate define the distinctive exterior character of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. An active rear spoiler – the first of its type on a BMW – provides visual lightness and reduces lift at touring speeds. The new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is 200 millimetres longer in total than the BMW 3 Series Touring, comes with a 110-millimetre longer wheelbase and stands 81 millimetres taller. However,
the clever use of proportions, surfaces and lines ensures that the
BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is immediately recognisable as a member
of the new BMW 3 Series range.

Impressive long-distance comfort in a unique ambience.

Generous interior dimensions allow the passengers in every seat of the
BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo to sit back and enjoy an impressive feeling of space and unbeatable freedom of movement. The front and rear passengers all benefit from a seating position raised by 59 millimetres, which provides an outstanding view out and makes entry and exit significantly more comfortable. Plus, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo also offers extra headroom. The increase in space will be particularly noticeable in the rear compartment, where a full 70 millimetres of additional legroom over the Sedan and Touring – giving luxury-car levels of spaciousness – is there to be enjoyed. The cocooning nature of the interior, complemented by its design forms, colour scheme and materials, creates a lounge-style ambience which allows passengers to enjoy short trips and long journeys alike in relaxed comfort.

Intelligent load area management.

The load area also reflects the car’s increased dimensions, its 520 litres of boot capacity even outstripping that of the BMW 3 Series Touring by 25 litres. The large load aperture and high-opening tailgate make access easier. Practical standard features – such as the 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat bench with folding head restraints and tilt-adjustable backrests (cargo function), and the two-piece parcel shelf – underscore the impressive functionality of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. The large load area can be utilised in many different ways, allowing intelligent space management. Practical features such as lashing points, multifunction hooks and an underfloor storage compartment make it even more convenient to use, while the LED strips that illuminate the cargo area emphasise the premium quality of the 3 Series Gran Turismo.

Quintessential BMW 3 Series: functional elegance, three equipment lines.

High-end material combinations and fit and finish of the highest quality underline the premium ambience on board the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. The latest addition to the 3 Series family can be ordered in an entry-level version, with the Sport Line, Luxury Line or Modern Line equipment packages, or with the optional M Sport package, which will already be available from July 2013.

Three petrol and two diesel engines power the GT off the start line.

Customers can choose from a selection of five powerful, refined and economical engines – covering an output range from 105 kW/143 hp to 225 kW/306 hp– from the launch of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. All the powerplants use BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The range-topping six-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet of the BMW 335i Gran Turismo is joined by the four-cylinder petrol units in the BMW 328i Gran Turismo and BMW 320i Gran Turismo. The two 2.0-litre diesel engines powering the BMW 320d Gran Turismo and BMW 318d Gran Turismo round off the line-up at launch.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox as
standard, although BMW also offers an eight-speed automatic as an option for all engine variants. Both gearboxes link up with the fuel-saving Auto Start-Stop function.

Advanced suspension technology, featuring a large number of light-alloy components, the torque steer-free Electric Power Steering, finely-balanced axle load distribution (50:50) and a torsionally stiff lightweight body ensure outstanding handling attributes and a high degree of agility and precision.
The longer wheelbase (+ 110 mm), greater wheel diameter and baseline specification of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo– which includes 17-inch wheels – result in a car offering excellent directional stability and long-distance comfort.

BMW EfficientDynamics.

In addition to its enviable practicality and sporting dynamics, the outstanding fuel economy of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo also serves the cause of driving pleasure. The key here is the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy, whose influence can be seen in virtually every area of the new model. Building on the good work of the ultra-frugal petrol and diesel engines, the intelligent lightweight construction concept of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismoand its optimised aerodynamics (including Air Curtains, Air Breathers and the active rear spoiler) do their bit to maximise efficiency and dynamics. And other measures, such as the Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, Optimum Shift Indicator and on-demand operation of ancillary components join the campaign to ensure the powerful BMW 3 Series Gran Turismoboasts impressively low fuel consumption and emissions. The economy drive doesn’t stop there, either; the car still has the potential to cut fuel use by as much as another 20 per cent using ECO PRO mode and the new ECO PRO Route function.

BMW ConnectedDrive.

An extensive selection of driver assistance systems and mobility solutions, offered  under the BMW ConnectedDrive programme, allows the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo to set the benchmark in its segment in terms of safety, convenience and infotainment. One highlight of the range is the latest-generation full-colour Head-Up Display, which projects key information onto the windscreen in sharp resolution. Included alongside an array of other convenience and safety-enhancing assistance systems is highly effective interface technology that allows extensive use of external mobile phones and numerous Bluetooth office functions for internet-based services.

The Apps option and free BMW Connected application provide access to services such as social networks, web radio and iPhone calendar functions. Last but not least, information and office services, and travel and leisure planners using the Google Maps and Panoramio services, further increase levels of passenger comfort in the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo.
