Infiniti FX : The Best of Both Worlds

The recently enhanced Infiniti FX is an interesting experiment in what happens when a manufacturer seeks to create a new hybrid vehicle capable of fulfilling the dual roles of sports car and  SUV.

With this aim in mind, its worth stating that the design influence of the FX’s exterior seems to owe more to its sports utility vehicle heritage than any recognisably modern sports car, although it has clearly been taking lessons from Infiniti’s own Essence Concept car which the Japanese manufacturer unveiled earlier this year.

The unique chassis shape and redesigned grille and fascia make a significant contribute to the Infiniti FX’s idiosyncratic appearance and it’s probably fair to say that as many people will love or hate the car based purely on these aesthetics alone.

Where it might win some definite fans however is in the engine department and here the range offers two distinct paths to choose from.

Potential Infiniti FX buyers are able to opt for a

  • 3.5 liter 24-valve DOHC V6 version (dubbed the FX35, for obvious reasons),
  • or a more beefy 5.0 liter 32-valve DOHC V8 equipped machine which also incorporates VVEL(Variable Valve Event & Lift)  into the mix just for good measure.

Factor in the inclusion of Intelligent All Wheel Drive in both models as well as double-wishbone front/multi-link rear suspension and it becomes clear that Infiniti have put a great deal of effort into ensuring that the ride quality and driver enjoyment are high on their list of priorities.

The new Infiniti FX models are entering into a marketplace which, whilst not overcrowded, is home to some serious competition. The brand may not currently have the cache of big names such as Audi and Porsche but with this most recent overhaul, Infiniti have produced a vehicle well worth considering due to their unique interpretation of what exactly a sports car / SUV hybrid is capable of.
